WE ARE NOT LAWYERS

OR PARALEGALS

Texas CURE does not do legal work or research. We cannot make copies of legal documents. We cannot help inmates or family members find reputable attorneys.

Our main objective is to work toward the passage of proactive legislation on both the state and national level. We do this by communicating with legislators and discussing the pros and cons of the  the bills they vote on. We attend House and Senate hearings and offer testimony for or against bills before the legislature.

We also communicate with members of the news media in an effort to have our views placed into the public forum. Additionally, we network with other organizations whose objectives coincide with our own, such as The Texas Inmate Family Association (TIFA), the Texas Criminal Justice Coalition (TCJC), and the Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP).

We encourage our members to be politically informed and to take an active role in the voting process. Too often we hear people say that they are powerless to change the “system.” But that is not true, every vote counts, and as our membership grows, so does our power to make a difference.  We also provide our members with the resources to contact their legislators and make their voices heard. When enough people express their concerns over important issues, our elected officials listen. The voting citizens of this state put them in office, and those same citizens can remove them. Working together we can make the noble phrase coined by Abraham Lincoln, “ government of the people, by the people, for the people,” more than a hackneyed cliché. If you are not a member of Texas CURE, we hope you will join us today.

“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.”
