If you have an incarcerated loved one, or if you are just a citizen who is dissatisfied with the criminal justice system, never think that you cannot help make a difference. The only reason the status quo (The existing state of affairs, esp. regarding social or political issues) remains the same is that too many people mistakenly believe they are powerless to change it. Therefore, they do not try: they do not vote for progressive candidates at election time. When state senators and state representatives from their districts fail to do their jobs, many voters do not express their discontent. Trust me, when enough of their constituents complain about important issues, politicians listen, because satisfying the wishes of the majority their constituents is what keeps them in office. Listed below is a link that will take you to a website where you can easily determine which government officials represent the district where you live. Politicians are public servants, and their job is to serve you. When you learn of a bill before the legislature, contact your elected officials and let them know why you are for or against it.

WRITE LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
When you read in the newspaper about some political incident, action or inaction, that upsets you, express yourself in a letter to the editor. What you say can inspire others to do likewise, and if enough people voice their discontent, politicians take heed. Many, if not all, elected officials employ a “clipping service” that compiles a file of news articles that mention their names. Politicians meticulously monitor what is said about them, because their jobs may well hinge upon their popularity, or lack thereof. Speak out and be heard.
